It’s time for celebrations for Indian cricket team vice-captain Rohit Sharma, the Hit Man of the Indian cricket team, as he is fondly called by his fans will be soon receiving the highest sporting honour. National Sports Awards selection committee has shortlisted Rohit Sharma’s name in the list of athletes who will be conferred with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award for the year 2020.  After Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, Rohit will be the 4th cricketer to be honoured with this award.

The decision was taken on Tuesday by the committee after they met at Sports Authority of India headquarters in the country capital. The committee has Virender Sehwag and Sardar Singh as their board members. While master blaster Sachin Tendulkar had bagged this award in the year 1998, MS Dhoni was conferred with this award when he lead the Indian team for T20 World Cup in 2007, followed by Virat Kohli being conferred with it in the year 2018.

Rohit Sharma will be soon seen playing at IPL 2020 tournament to be held in UAE.


Also besides Sharma, the list of sportspersons to be conferred with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award includes the first woman wrestler who won a gold medal at Asian Games in 2018, Vinesh Phogat, paddler Manika Batra for winning a gold medal at Commonwealth Games and a bronze medal at Asian Games in the year 2018. Also added to the list are Indian women’s hockey team captain Rani Rampal and Paralympic gold medalist Mariappan Thangavelu.
